TWO - The Musical

Be Careful What You Wish For!

Jonathan Lane decides leave his high paying, but immensely stressful career to pursue his passion for songwriting. He immediately finds out that free will sometimes comes with a high price.

Loosely based on the story of Job - his life is upended as one thing after another goes to south.

In the end, it's all about dogged perseverance, belief in oneself and a luck bit of luck.

SYNOPSIS

ACT 1:  Jonathan Lane makes a bold choice: to leave a high stress career and comfortable lifestyle and follow his true passion: songwriting [Death By Monkeys]. His co-workers think he's crazy. [Debts and Obligations]. He and Emma. his longtime girlfriend, fight about it. She is convinced he is making a huge mistake [Greener]. Jonathan knows that things have not been good between them for a while [Something's Not Right]. In spite of all the negativity he forges on [I Can Do This].

His friend Will runs a small recording studio and lets Jonathan work (and often sleep there). Jonathan falls in love with Kiriko, a singer Will has hired to record a duet Jonathan has written [Here She Comes]. He keeps his feeling under wraps but secretly wants her [Obsession]. They share tender moments together in the studio [Dance With Me]. Unable to keep a lid on his emotions he takes a chance and tells her how he feels [Say The Words]. She does not have feelings for him and tries to let him down carefully [Wait]. Emma finds out about Kiriko and its the last straw in their shaky relationship. She leaves him [Goodbye]. Crushed by rejection, Jonathan becomes depressed [Anyone, Anywhere].

ACT II: Jonathan struggles with his songwriting. He gets no traction with his songs [Zero People]. Emma's ex shows up and wants her back. He says he's been miserable [Some Kind Of Madness]. He keeps showing up to her dismay. In a moment of weakness, she sleeps with him [What Have I Done?]. Meanwhile more bad news pummels Jonathan's fragile mind. An old friend, Hugh, breaks the news that his best friend from school has committed suicide. They were once inseparable, but life got in the way. Jonathan laments not keeping in touch. [Inseparable].

His friends Zoë, Elliot and Will try to cheer Jonathan up [Swipe Left - The Telenovella Song]. But his heart is broken [How Much?]. Alone in the dark of the studio he tries to write but his confidence is shattered [Poser]. Zoey talks with Emma about Jonathan [He's a Good Man]. Emma finally tells her ex she's in love with Jonathan and sends him away for good. Alone in her room listening to his songs she decides to work things out with Jonathan (Two).

His life is in ruins and its all his fault [What Have I Done?]. He has been drinking heavily to self medicate his pain. He wakes up one night, hung over at the door of Emma's place. He's been mugged. In his damaged state he has an epiphany and calls out for her. When she opens the door and cradles him in her arms, he professes his love for her. And promises to change [Heartache]. And not give up on his dream [Tree].

Thinking that the worst is over, however, the next day a messenger arrives at the studio and delivers a legal document with Jonathan's name on it. A huge record company Omnipresent Media Group sues him for plagiarism. The damages are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. At wits end, he sees no way out [Just Like Job] and considers going back to his old job.

However, one of pop stars of Omnipresent, g.d. finds out about the plagiarism suit and can't believe his company could be so cruel. He visits Will's studio and tells Jonathan that he likes the song in question and its not at all similar to the song that Ommipresent has rights to. He tells Jonathan should fight the lawsuit. [David And Goliath]. Not only that, g.d. wants to record it for his next release. He thinks it a hit.

Jonathan feels vindicated. He and Emma agree to work things out together [Two-reprise].
