SYNOPSIS
ACT 1: Jonathan Lane makes a bold choice: to leave a high stress career and comfortable lifestyle and follow his true passion: songwriting [Death By Monkeys]. His co-workers think he's crazy. [Debts And Obligations]. He and Emma. his longtime girlfriend, fight about it. She is convinced he is making a huge mistake [Greener]. Jonathan knows that things have not been good between them for a while [Something's Not Right]. They decide to take a break in their relationship. Jonathan has sudden doubts about his talent, but he pushes on [I Can Do This].
His friend Will runs a small recording studio and lets Jonathan write there. Jonathan is mesmerized by a singer named Kiriko as she dances to the playback of one of his songs [Kiriko Flows]. Kiriko has been hired by Will to record a duet with another artist. She is mysterious and beautiful. Jonathan is smitten. [Here She Comes]. He keeps his feeling under wraps. They share tender moments together in the studio [Dance With Me]. Unable to keep his emotions in check, he takes a chance and tells her how he feels [Say The Words]. The feeling is not mutual and Kiriko tries to let him down carefully [Wait]. Emma finds out about Kiriko and it's the last straw. She leaves him [Goodbye]. Crushed by rejection, Jonathan becomes depressed [Anyone Anywhere].
ACT II: Jonathan continues to struggle with his songwriting. He gets no traction with his songs [Zero People]. Emma's ex shows up and wants her back. He says he's been miserable [Empty Glasses]. In a moment of weakness, she sleeps with him. Meanwhile more bad news blindsides Jonathan. He learns that his best friend from school has committed suicide. They were once inseparable, but life got in the way. Jonathan laments not keeping in touch. [Inseparable].
Jonathan's current friends, Zoey, Elliot and Will, each try to cheer him up [Swipe Left, Island Time, Lucky].
But his heart is broken. Alone in the dark of the studio he tries to work but his confidence is shattered
[What Have I Done]. Zoey talks with Emma about Jonathan [He's a Good Man]. Emma finally sends her
ex away for good. Alone in her room listening to Jonathan's songs, she decides to work things out with him.
To make matters worse Jonathan has started drinking, to self medicate his pain. He wakes up one night, and has an epiphany [Awakening]. Hung over, he finds himself at the door of Emma's apartment. He calls out for her. When she opens the door and cradles him in her arms, he professes his love for her. And that they are meant to be together [Two].
Jonathan senses that maybe his luck is changing. However, the next day a messenger arrives at the studio and delivers a legal document with Jonathan's name on it. A huge record company Omnipresent Media Group sues him for copyright infringement. The damages are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. At wits end, he sees no way out and considers going back to his old job. His friends help him decide what to do [Just Like Job].
Unbeknownst to any of them, one of the top stars of Omnipresent, dogG finds out about the plagiarism suit and can't believe his company could be so cruel. He visits Will's studio and tells Jonathan that he likes the song and it's not at all similar to the song that Ommipresent has rights to. He tells Jonathan should stand up for himself and fight the lawsuit [Take A Stand]. Not only that, dogG wants to record the song as his next release.
Jonathan feels vindicated. He and Emma agree to work things out together [Two-reprise].
Jonathan's song, released by dogG, becomes a hit. Jonathan's friends are elated. Omnipresent Media drops the lawsuit. He has survived. The ensemble finale [Debts And Obligations- reprise] takes on a completely different - and uplifting - meaning in the end.
